Veteran Homeless & Housing Resources

Homeless veterans programs

Our nation’s veterans fight for the freedoms we enjoy, yet each year thousands of veterans struggle with housing and some become homeless.

Homeless veterans programs, as well as programs that provide housing for veterans are available and can help veterans who need housing and healthcare assistance.

VA-Guaranteed Home Loans

The VA offers a home loan guaranty that can help veterans buy, build, refinance or renovate a home. Get more information on eligibility requirements and home loan benefits.

Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program (HVRP)

The Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program (HVRP) helps homeless veterans find jobs and stable housing. The program provides grants and resources to existing state, local and non-profit agencies that seek to serve veterans.

VA-Specialty Adaptive Housing Grants

Grants are available for servicemembers and veterans who have a permanent and total service-connected disability and need to construct or remodel a home to better suit their needs.

U.S. Vets

This nonprofit is the nation’s largest provider of services to homeless and at-risk veterans. The organization has 11 facilities across six states and provides counseling services, job placement, case management, employment assistance and drug and alcohol-free housing. Each year the organization helps 3,000 veterans find housing.

Community Hope

For nearly three decades, Community Hope has provided housing and essential services to young adults as well as veterans. The nonprofit is the largest organization serving homeless veterans and families in and around New Jersey. Each day they shelter 165 veterans and have served more than 1,000 vets in the past nine years.1 The Hope for Veterans Program is a transitional housing program for veterans that provides resources and skills to help them overcome poverty and homelessness.

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and VA

Each department provides assistance for veterans who have become homeless or may be at risk.

Additionally, if a veteran you know is at risk of losing housing, the VA encourages you to reach out to them and call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID-VET.

Stand Downs

Another service provided by the VA are Stand Downs, which are one to three day events that provide services for homeless veterans including food, shelter, health screenings and clothing. Stand Downs additionally provide benefits counseling and referrals which can help homeless vets obtain the benefits they need.

Visit www.va.gov for a listing to upcoming Stand Downs.
