Veterans & others sick from water at Camp Lejeune can now file for compensation

New law applies to those made ill by exposure between 1953 and 1987

The situation at a glance:

Drinking water at Lejeune found to have been toxic for 34 years
One million military and civilian personnel were exposed
All of them were at risk of becoming sick, and many did
Eight diseases, mostly forms of cancer, have been associated with exposure
A veteran, former reservist, or member of the National Guard who was exposed while serving at Camp Lejeune and later developed one of these eight diseases will be presumed to have contracted [it] at Camp Lejeune and the New River Air Station during the exposure period.
The eight diseases associated with exposure to the toxic water are kidney cancer; liver cancer; non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; adult leukemia; multiple myeloma; Parkinson’s disease; aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes; and bladder cancer.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act, which President Biden signed into law in early August 2022, allows those affected, including civilians, to sue the federal government.
