Patient Safety

The VA maintains a National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) to ensure veterans are receiving the best possible care at VA facilities.

Programs and Initiatives

Programs and initiatives implemented by the NCPS include patient safety training, tool kits for human-factors oriented care, cognitive aids to reduce the risk of inadvertent harm to patients, and resources for development of safety curriculum.

Veterans and healthcare professionals are encouraged to give the NCPS feedback on its practices to further assist facilities in providing appropriate care for our wounded warriors.

Additional Tools

In concert with its programs and initiatives, the NCPS offers clinical team training and provides guidelines for limiting margins of error in surgeries, diagnoses of medical conditions and drug prescriptions.

The Patient Safety Fellowship is offered to provide in-depth education about patient safety practices and leadership in the field. This opportunity is open to nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers and healthcare administrators in the post-doctoral or post-master’s degree phase of their careers.
