Camp Lejeune
Veterans & others sick from water at Camp Lejeune can now file for compensation
New law applies to those made ill by exposure between 1953 and 1987
The situation at a glance:
- Drinking water at Lejeune found to have been toxic for 34 years
- One million military and civilian personnel were exposed
- All of them were at risk of becoming sick, and many did
- Eight diseases, mostly forms of cancer, have been associated with exposure
- A veteran, former reservist, or member of the National Guard who was exposed while serving at Camp Lejeune and later developed one of these eight diseases will be presumed to have contracted [it] at Camp Lejeune and the New River Air Station during the exposure period.
- The eight diseases associated with exposure to the toxic water are kidney cancer; liver cancer; non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; adult leukemia; multiple myeloma; Parkinson’s disease; aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes; and bladder cancer.
The Camp Lejeune Justice Act, which President Biden signed into law in early August 2022, allows those affected, including civilians, to sue the federal government.
