Scholarship Opportunities
Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, veterans are afforded the opportunity to attend a college or university with 36 months of education benefits. This credit is payable up to 15 years after the veteran has been discharged.
Neither the Montgomery GI Bill nor the Post-9/11 GI Bill stop a veteran from receiving additional scholarship funds from outside sources.
Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship
In addition to education benefits for tuition, books, housing and other fees, the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship offers the children of service members who were killed in the line of duty after Sept. 10, 2001 a number of benefits:
- For all public university or college and in-state students, 100% of tuition and fees will be paid to the school;
- Higher tuition reimbursement rates may be available to students attending institutions of higher education in Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, or Texas;
- Housing allowance, paid monthly;
- Stipend for books and other supplies
Children may be married or over the age of 23 and still use these benefits, though they must be used by the child’s 33rd birthday. Also, eligibility for the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship precludes children from the Yellow Ribbon Program.
