Hospital Report Card
As part of their commitment to providing veterans with safe and reliable health care, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) conducts an annual review of the health care providers and hospitals under its administration. As the largest health care system in America, the VHA’s 152 hospitals and 821 clinics serve six million veterans each year. The VHA began reviewing hospitals and other clinical settings in 2008 to ensure that veterans in any of the hospitals and clinics are receiving quality and safe health care services.
What Does the VA’s Hospital Report Card Include?
The 2013 annual Hospital Report Card, (which reports data for 2012, the most recent year for which data is available,) evaluates factors important to providing excellent health care services.
The report provides information reviewing six separate categories of quality health care, including whether the care provided was:
- Effective
- Equitable
- Safe
- Timely
- Patient-centered
- Efficient
The report can help veterans and their families make informed decisions when selecting hospitals.
The report detailed the achievements and challenges facing VA hospitals. The report notes that VA hospitals often exceed the services provided by privately run hospitals. When it comes to the care of veterans, VA hospitals continue in the provision of safe and accountable health care services. This is especially true in the case of female veterans. By many measures, women veterans who receive care in VA hospitals received health care services that directly address their needs.
