Memorial Day Observance and Events
Although it is impossible to adequately honor the sacrifices of our fallen service members, we look forward to remembering them on Memorial Day each year. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971 and is intended to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. Military.
This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26, 2025 and there will be many events and observances happening around the country.
VA Cemetery Ceremonies
“This Memorial Day weekend, we invite Americans to visit VA cemeteries and join us in reflecting upon the important legacies of these fallen heroes,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.
The VA will host Memorial Day ceremonies this weekend at more than 130 VA national cemeteries across the country. These events are open to the public and will include wreath-laying ceremonies, commemorative speeches, the playing of Taps, and other events. Live streaming, recorded video and photographs from many of the ceremonies will be shared on the National Cemetery Administration’s Facebook and X (Twitter) pages.
Additionally, all 156 VA national cemeteries will be open to the public throughout the Memorial Day weekend. Use this link to find a VA cemetery location near you: VA Cemetery Locations.
Events by State
As memorials and observances take place across the country, many free events will occur at military bases and in capital cities and smaller towns. The VA keeps a running list of these events by state.
Veterans Legacy Memorial
Recently, the VA created the Veterans Legacy Memorial website to record tributes, photos, biographies, documents, and other information about veterans. This Memorial Day, veterans, friends, and family are invited to contribute to this Memorial website. The website is also open for the public to view and remember the fallen.
