New Law Waives License Plate Fees for Combat Veterans

Free Illinois license plates for combat vetsIllinois has just passed a law that will help veterans make the transition back to civilian life a little smoother. Both chambers of the Illinois State Legislature unanimously passed a law that gives active veterans returning from duty the right to qualify for free Illinois license plates. The bill was sponsored by Republican Senator Neil Anderson, of Rock Island, Illinois.

The new law, signed by Governor Bruce Rauner in honor of Veterans Day, will take effect starting in January 2017. In order to be eligible, Illinois veterans must show proof of payment, either receiving imminent danger pay or hostile fire pay. This pay must occur within the twelve months prior to applying for a new license plate, and will need to be provided to the Secretary of State, in order to qualify.

Governer Bruce Rauner also signed a few other bills affecting veterans at the Illinois State Fair. These include offering property tax breaks for disabled veterans who need to make accessibility upgrades to their homes, and establishing a discount card program that can be used by veterans and military at participating merchants.
