Abraham to Serve on AG, Veterans Affairs Committees

Fifth District Congressman-elect Ralph Abraham has secured assignments on the House Agriculture and Veterans Affairs committees.

Abraham, R-Alto, said those were two of his top committee requests after winning his Saturday runoff election against Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo.

“Agriculture is critically important to the 24 parishes in the 5th District,” he said in an interview with The News-Star this week. “And we have so many veterans who live and work and serve from the district I want to be a strong voice for them.”

Abraham is a veteran.

Luke Letlow, Abraham’s chief of staff, said the committee assignments aren’t official, but they were recommended by the Republican Training Committee.

Abraham was informed of his assignments by Louisiana’s highest ranking member of Congress, Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip.

“Rep. Scalise has been very helpful to us throughout the process,” Abraham said.

Letlow said Abraham also asked House Speaker John Boehner to be considered for the House Select Intelligence Committee, but it’s rare for a freshman to be assigned to that committee.

Abraham, who will replace U.S. Rep. Vance McAllister, R-Swartz, will be sworn in during the first week of January.
