Veterans’ Administration Awards $6 Million for Homeless in SLO County
Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County and Good Samaritan Services in partnership with the 5Cities Homeless Coalition have been awarded two grants totaling $6 million over three years through Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) funding to help U.S. veterans and their families who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. The grants will provide housing assistance and supportive services to homeless veterans and their families living in San Luis Obispo County to help them transition from homelessness into housing.
Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, Inc. (CAPSLO) was awarded $4.9 million. Working with Americas Job Center (formerly the OneStop), the Veterans Services Office, and ECHO (El Camino Homeless Organization), CAPSLOs SSVF project will provide employment development services, assistance finding and maintaining stable housing, and other support services that promote self-sufficiency.
CAPSLO CEO Elizabeth Biz Steinberg explained, San Luis Obispo County was identified as one of 76 counties throughout the nation where the need for SSVF services was critical. We are looking forward to working with our community partners to help veterans and their families toward the secure, brighter future that they deserve.
With a grant of $1.1 million, Good Samaritan Services will work in partnership with 5Cities Homeless Coalition to provide homeless prevention and rapid rehousing services for homeless veterans and their families in Southern San Luis Obispo County. Through the newly formed partnership, Good Samaritan Services with 5 Cities Homeless Coalition will work to temporarily shelter homeless individuals and families into Good Samaritans shelter operations while providing case management and direct financial assistance to enable them to transition out of homelessness.
Good Samaritan Services is very excited to be the recipient of the SSVF Grant to serve veterans in Southern San Luis Obispo County, noted Sylvia Barnard, Executive Director of Good Samaritan Services. We have been working with the Veterans Administration for the past four years. Being able to help homeless veterans get into a home strongly supports our mission and partnership with both the VA and 5Cities Homeless Coalition.
