HIAWATHA (KWWL) – A group in eastern Iowa is getting money to help prevent veteran homelessness.

The Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Inc. (HACAP) in Hiawatha announced Monday it’s receiving $1.2 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The VA is awarding $300 million in grants to 301 agencies across the country. According to the VA, that will help 115,000 homeless and at-risk veterans and their families.

HACAP calls its program Operation Home. The program helps homeless veterans by helping them into permanent housing through case management and connects them to VA benefits. The program also helps connect veterans to other organizations that may be able to assist them.

Since receiving its first grant in October 2013, the program has helped 146 veterans.

HACAP provides a variety of services in six Iowa counties: Linn, Johnson, Benton, Iowa, Jones, and Cedar.

The new grant from the VA will let HACAP expand this program into Black Hawk, Buchanan, Delaware, and Dubuque Counties.
