Veterans Day 2024
In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I. In 1938, November 11th became a federal holiday known as Armistice Day, then Veterans Day. Now, November marks National Veteran and Military Families Month. This year, we will celebrate Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th. Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—who served our country during war and peacetime.
Although benefits are available for veterans every day of the year, it is important to be aware of the special events happening on November 11, 2024.
An official wreath-laying ceremony is held each Veterans Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony commences precisely at 11:11 a.m. ET and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by Veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries.
Additionally, this year, 56 communities across 29 states and the District of Columbia will host VA-recognized Veterans Day observances to pay tribute to America’s heroes. Each site received Veterans Day posters, military ceremonial support from the Department of Defense, and a certificate from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for inclusion in their event programs. A list of the approved sites for 2024 can be found here: Veterans Day National Committee selects Regional Sites for 2024 – VA News.
Even more parades, ceremonies, and other celebrations will be held around the country on Veterans Day. The VA website keeps a database of events by state, which can be found here: Find your Veterans Day events, 2024 – VA News.
Beyond celebrations and commemorations, there are also many discounts and freebies for veterans on Veterans Day. A list of 2024 restaurant, retail, travel, and recreation deals can be found here: Military.com Veterans Day Discounts. You may need your military ID card to access these deals. If you do not have a military ID or VA health benefits photo ID, the Veterans ID Card program allows all honorably discharged veterans to apply online and receive by mail a card meant to function as proof of service. Most businesses will accept it as proof of service.
We want to thank all of our veterans and their families on this Veterans Day. We are forever grateful for your service and sacrifice.
