In July 2025, the VA announced an $800 million infrastructure initiative to improve VA health care facilities as part of the Veterans Health Administration’s Non-Recurring Maintenance program. This funding will come out of savings gleaned from various Veterans Health Administration reform efforts.
This funding will allow the VA to repair and update aging VA facilities and technology and complete a variety of other projects including:
- Boiler and chiller systems
- Electric infrastructure improvements
- Elevators
- Heating ventilation and air conditioner systems
- Sprinklers and fire alarms
- Renovation of clinical/support spaces
- Utility system upgrades
- Medical equipment sites
- Electronic Health Record Modernization infrastructure
These costs will bring the total Non-Recurring Maintenance program spending for fiscal year 2025 to $2.8 billion — almost $500 million more than fiscal year 2024. For many veterans seeking VA healthcare, these updates will be a welcome improvement.
