BJCTA Director Joins White House Panel on Veterans, Transportation Jobs
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Ann August, executive director of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority, will participate this week in a White House panel on veterans employment issues.
August will be among a panel of leaders from across the country involved in transit and the maritime, trucking and rail industries.
The forum will focus on opportunities for recruiting, training, hiring and retaining veteran workers, August said. The meeting is part of a White House initiative aimed at increasing veteran employment in the U.S.
August, herself a veteran, retired from the U.S. Army Reserves’ JAG Corps in 2004. She has more than 30 years of experience in transit and was named BJCTA’s first female executive director in 2012.
BJCTA employs more than 40 veterans among its workforce of about 350 people.
The panel discussion is scheduled Thursday in the White House’s Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Transportation and Veterans Affairs departments have been involved in the push to get more veterans hired in transportation fields in recent years.
Those two departments operate the Veterans Transportation Career Center, which helps veterans transition their skills into the transportation industry jobs.
