Congressman Awards Medals to Vietnam War Veteran

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) –

A Siouxland veteran of the Vietnam War has the medals that he earned for his service to his country.

Friday, Congressman Steve King presented the Bronze Star, and seven other medals to Army Veteran Richard Huebner of Akron, Iowa.

They didn’t come without serious sacrifice. Huebner served in Vietnam from 1963 to 1968. In 1966 he was to be discharged, but was sent back into action. He was injured in a convoy that hit a land mine. He was the only one in his vehicle to survive.

Then, on Christmas Eve 1967, Huebner was with the 25th Brigade attached to the Triple Duece Unit in Dante. That day, the base was overrun, and 265 men lost their lives. Huebner was one of only three men to survive.
