Events to Honor Veterans, Military at Wayne Community College
Wayne Community College will hold several events to honor Americas veterans and military service members on Monday, Nov. 10.
Students and employees are invited to participate in a rally to honor the veterans and active duty members on our campus. That event will be held at 11 a.m. at the Plonk Clock in the center of the campus. After brief remarks from a couple of veterans and a “sound off” with veterans and military personnel sharing their years of service, branch, and its battle cry, American flags will be distributed. Participants will be encouraged to walk over to the college’s Veterans Monument to “plant” their flags in preparation for the ceremony later in the day.
The college will hold a public ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Monument on its campus. U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield will provide the keynote address. WCC President Dr. Kay H. Albertson, and college employees, current students, and alumni will also participate. A reception will follow the program.
Representatives of all branches of the military have been invited to set up displays and provide information in the colleges front parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Center will also be there to provide counseling and information on available services for veterans. The public is also encouraged to take advantage of this “round up.”
The military displays and ceremony will be moved into the Wayne Learning Center Atrium and Moffatt Auditorium in the event of inclement weather.
Even the youngest students at the college will acknowledge the service of men and women in uniform. The WCC Child Care Center will have special art projects and patriotic stories read by a parent and grandparent who are veterans, and at 10 a.m., the youngsters will have a ceremony of their own and line the front of their facility with small American flags.
