Hobart Ready to Salute U.S. Heroes on Veterans Day

Tuesday is Veterans Day, a day we thank the men and women who serve and have served in the U.S. military. Mayor Brian Snedecor, American Legion Post 54 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Kostbade-Fowble Post 5365 invite the public to celebrate at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Veterans Park, 5899 E. 73rd Ave., Hobart.

Quilts of Valor

St. Mary Medical Center, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart, will mark Veterans Day with a Quilts of Valor Celebration at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Use West Entrance and go to the auditorium.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation seeks to comfort veterans, including those touched by war, and will honor 15 local veterans. Call (219) 947-6041.

Citizens to meet

Concerned Citizens of Hobart, a group working against the GEO for-profit detention center in Hobart, is meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at First Unitarian Church, Fifth and Main streets, immediately following the 6 p.m. Hobart City Council meeting. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend the 6 p.m. Council meeting, 414 Main St., and come afterward to the church across the street.

Christmas Open House

Hobart Historical Society holds its Christmas Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 706 E. 4th St., with its Christmas displays. Refreshments will be served at this free event.

Fashions and lunch

Hobart Tri Kappas A Day of Fashion will be held Sunday at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. U.S. 30, Hobart. Doors open at 11 a.m.; lunch and fashion show at 1 p.m. A few tickets are available for $35 at the Hobart Chamber of Commerce office.

Care packages for troops

Hobart Family YMCA is asking Hobart residents who have relatives and friends serving in military to email their names and full addresses to Sharon Tarry ASAP at starry@hobartymca.org.

At 9 a.m. Nov. 12, join Y and Hobart Kiwanis members to pack boxes for these troops. Donate items for the boxes (suggested list at www.hobartYMCA.org) and/or cash to pay for postage, anytime through Nov. 12 at YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place, Hobart.

Toys for Tots

Hobarts annual U.S. Marine Corps. Toys for Tots drive kicks off at the Hobart Chamber of Commerce luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 12 at Elks Lodge 1152, 3580 W. 61st Ave., Hobart.

Bruce Wilkerson will talk about the toy drive. New, unwrapped toys may be brought to the luncheon or dropped off at the chamber office, 1001 Lillian St., to be distributed to needy area children.

Lunch cost is $15 and reservations are requested at (219) 942-5774.

Italian Night dinner

American Legion Post 54, 208 S. Linda St., will host its annual Italian Night from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 13. Vet Fest 2014 features Italian spaghetti with meat sauce, salad bar, dessert and coffee for $8 per adult and $3 for children 9 and younger.

Bowl with the YMCA

Join the Hobart Family YMCA for its annual Bowl-A-Thon Nov. 13 at Cressmoor Lanes, 620 N. Wisconsin St., Hobart. Bowling starts at 6:30 p.m. with check-in from 5:30 to 6:15. Individuals and teams welcome. To register, call (219) 942-2183, ext. 13 or email dpolomchak@hobartymca.org.
