Nevada Congresswoman Introduces Legislation to Address VA Appeals Backlog

seal of the department of veterans affairsCongresswoman Dina Titus, from Nevadas First Congressional District, has created new legislation which seeks to address the VAs backlog of hundreds of thousands of appeals for VA benefits.

Currently, the Department of Veteran Affairs has over 300,000 appeals waiting to be evaluated. These appeals come from injured veterans who believe that their claims have been wrongly denied, and are desperately waiting to receive the benefits they deserve.

The Congresswomans proposed legislation would create a task force designed to address the VA backlog. The task force would study the current VA appeals process, and make recommendations to the VA as well as Congress about ways to improve the process and make sure veterans receive accurate decisions in a timely manner.

The VA has been working to streamline its main claims process, and has succeeded in working through hundreds of thousands of initial claims applications. However, because more claims have now been processed, there have been more denied claims than usual, and the appeals system is now overloaded.

In commenting on the legislation, Titus said, While it is a good thing that the overall backlog of VA claims has been dramatically reduced, this has correspondingly led to an overload of the appeals process Improving the speed and efficiency of both the claims process and the appeals system is the least we can do to recognize and compensate military men and women for their service and sacrifice.

Titus proposed the same legislation last year, which passed in the House but stalled in the Senate. The bill was discussed in front of a Subcommittee of the House Veterans Affairs Committee late last month, and the Congresswoman hopes the legislation will pass without issues during this current session.
