Plaque Honoring Korean War Veterans Dedicated at Rhode Island State House

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Governor Chafee on Saturday hosted a ceremony dedicating a long-in-the-works Korean War Veterans plaque at the State House.

State lawmakers in 1985 passed legislation calling for the installation at the State House of a monument honoring the 39,000 Rhode Islanders who served in the Korean War. Lawmakers approved $5,000 for construction, but the monument was never built, according to a legislative news release.

Over the past year, Rhode Island officials partnered with leaders from three Korean War veterans groups to bring the plaque to life.

It was designed by Robert B. Adams, of East Greenwich-based Graphic Designers Inc., and installed on a wall adjacent to the Bell Room on the first floor of the State House.

Representatives from all branches of the U.S. military attended Saturdays ceremony. Also on hand were U.S. Sen. Jack Reed; state Sen. Walter S. Felag Jr., chair of the Senate Committee on Special Legislation and Veterans Affairs; state Rep. Raymond E. Gallison Jr., chair of the House Finance Committee; and state Rep. Jan P. Malik, chair of the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
