Ramsey County Veterans Court Seeks Vets to Volunteer as Mentors

The Ramsey County Veterans Court is seeking veterans to serve as volunteer mentors to Veterans Court participants.

Ramsey County Veterans Court provides veterans of the United States military branches who are charged with committing a crime in Ramsey County an alternative to traditional court processes. Veterans who voluntarily decide to participate in the court are provided coordinated support from a team of professionals including judges, attorneys, probation officers, law enforcement, Veterans Affairs and local county Veterans Services staff. The goal of the Veterans Court is to promote accountability and provide support to the individual veteran as he or she works through the requirements of the court.

Each participant in the Ramsey County Veterans Court is assigned a veteran mentor. Mentors serve as volunteer staff and are assigned to work one-on-one with participants in Veterans Court, acting as a coach, guide, role model and advocate. There are currently 20 volunteer mentors serving Ramsey County Veterans Court participants.

Ramsey County Veterans Court is a collaborative effort between the Minnesota 2nd Judicial District, the Ramsey County Attorneys Office, Project Remand, Ramsey County Community Corrections, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and Ramsey County Veterans Services.

Ramsey County Veterans Services provides guidance and assistance to veterans, their dependents and survivors in applying for veterans benefits provided by the state of Minnesota and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. There are approximately 29,000 veterans currently residing in Ramsey County.
