The VA Just Announced $84 Million in Grants to Help Homeless Veterans

Government data has shown that at any given time, tens of thousands of American veterans could be facing homelessness.  That’s why supporting homeless veterans has been a top VA priority for decades, but this week the VA took that support a step further.

On September 23, 2025, the VA announced that it will be giving $84 million in grants to 176 groups to help homeless veterans and veterans at risk of becoming homeless.  These grants will be broken into two categories:  $42 million is grants will go toward legal services and $42 million in grants will go toward case management services.

The VA Secretary, Doug Collins, has said that “[n]o one who served our nation in uniform should go without shelter.”  With this grant money, legal services organizations will be able to assist veterans with:

  • landlord-tenant disputes to prevent eviction;
  • court proceedings for child support, custody, or estate planning;
  • obtaining benefits like state and federal compensation; and
  • mounting a defense in criminal cases, such as outstanding warrants, fines, and driver’s license revocation.

A list of the legal services grant awardees can be found here:  FY26 LSV-H Awardees.

The case management grant will fund 100 case managers, who will provide veterans:

  • assistance with housing search and placement,
  • home visits to monitor housing stability and assess the need for services and other support, and
  • assistance with gaining access to educational activities that support personal empowerment and independence.

A list of the case management grant awardees can be found here:  VA Grant & Per Diem Program FY2026 Case Management Grants.

“These grants,” Secretary Collins said, “will provide crucial support and services to help thousands of Veterans on their journey back to self-sufficiency.”

These grants are in addition to efforts made in May 2025 when President Trump signed an executive order establishing the first-ever National Center for Warrior Independence for homeless veterans near Los Angeles.  This facility will be able to house up to 6,000 homeless veterans by 2028.  Also in May 2025, the VA announced $52.5 million in funding for community-based organizations that provide or coordinate suicide prevention services for Veterans and their families.
