Veterans Homeownership: Homes for Veterans

Through Veterans Build, Habitat for Humanity provides housing, volunteer and employment opportunities to U.S. veterans, current service members and their families.

The program has five interrelated missions:

  • Build affordable homes for veterans and their families
  • Mobilize veteran advocacy by engaging veterans
  • Provide employment opportunities to veterans
  • Educate veterans and their families about homeowners
  • Honor veterans who have been lost protecting America

Habitat for Humanity organizations all across America partner with military veterans and their families. The organization’s affiliates report that more than 46% of Habitat for Humanity local offices have helped build homes for veterans.

Unlike other organizations, partner families are required to help build their own home and the homes of others as part of participating in the program. Many veterans, even those who do not need housing, routinely participate.

Veterans Build and other programs targeting veteran lack of housing are vital programs.

Veterans and their family members are among the most vulnerable Americans in terms of housing. More than 4 million Veterans routinely put more than 30 percent of their income towards housing.

These levels are far beyond the recommended 30 percent of income that financial experts recommend for housing costs.

Additionally, more than 1.4 million veterans pay a whopping 50 percent or more of their monthly income towards housing.

The discrepancy between housing costs and veteran income contribute to the nearly seven percent of veterans who live in extreme poverty.
